Is Your Microbiome Secretly Working Against Your Waistline?

As the days get longer and the weather warms, many of us start thinking about shedding winter layers — both in our wardrobes and on our waistlines. But if you’ve been struggling with stubborn weight gain despite healthy eating, the culprit may not be your willpower — it could be your gut bacteria, an overgrowth of a group of bacteria called Firmicutes.

This spring, I’m inviting you to dig deeper into what’s really going on inside your gut, so you can finally shift your metabolism back into fat-burning mode.

What Are Firmicutes?

Firmicutes are one of the two dominant phyla (or large groups) of bacteria in the human gut, alongside Bacteroidetes. Together, they make up the majority of your gut microbiome — the trillions of microbes living in your digestive tract.

For most people, Firmicutes make up 40–60% of the total gut bacteria. They aren’t “bad” in themselves — in fact, many Firmicutes species play important roles in digestion and overall health. But when their numbers grow disproportionately high compared to other beneficial microbes, research suggests they may contribute to weight gain, inflammation, and metabolic issues.

Studies show that the balance of bacteria in your gut can influence your weight. One fascinating experiment found that mice with more Firmicutes bacteria gained more fat than lean mice — even when they ate the same food. When scientists transferred the gut bacteria from these “overweight” mice into healthy, bacteria-free mice, the new mice also started gaining fat without eating more. In humans, researchers have noticed a similar pattern: people with a higher proportion of Firmicutes tend to carry more weight. This is because these bacteria are very efficient at pulling extra calories out of food and encouraging the body to store them as fat. They can also affect blood sugar control, making it harder to lose weight.

Why Spring Is the Perfect Time to Reset

Spring is nature’s reset button. The days are longer, the weather is warmer, and fresh seasonal foods are in abundance. This makes it the perfect season to focus on cleansing and nourishing your body — especially your gut.

Over winter, it’s common to eat more hearty, starchy comfort foods and spend less time outdoors. While this is natural, it can shift your gut bacteria balance toward species that thrive on those winter eating patterns, including Firmicutes. By spring, your microbiome may be primed for a reset.

Eating a colourful variety of spring vegetables, fruits, and herbs feeds the “good” bacteria in your gut, while cutting back on processed foods helps starve out the overgrowth of Firmicutes. Combined with gentle lifestyle changes — like more movement, better hydration, and fresh air — you can help restore microbial balance, boost your metabolism, and feel lighter and more energised.

How the GI-MAP™ Complete Microbiome Test Fits In

While eating better in spring is a great start, the truth is: you can’t always guess what’s going on inside your gut. That’s where the GI-MAP™ test comes in. This advanced stool test takes a detailed snapshot of your microbiome, showing:

  • Your levels of Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, and other important gut bacteria.

  • Whether you have any harmful bacteria, parasites, or yeast overgrowth.

  • Signs of inflammation or poor digestion that might be slowing your metabolism.

With these results, we can see exactly what your gut needs — no more guesswork. If Firmicutes are too high, we can create a targeted plan to reduce their numbers and support the growth of beneficial microbes that help regulate weight, blood sugar, and energy. This means your spring cleanse won’t just be a quick detox — it will be a personalised program designed to rebalance your gut for lasting results.
