Vitamin D3 and Vitamin K2: The Perfect Partnership for Bone Health

For decades, calcium and vitamin D have been considered the cornerstone nutrients for maintaining healthy bones. While vitamin D3 is essential, it is only one part of the equation.
Think of the process like building a house:
Vitamin D3 helps your body absorb calcium from the food you eat.
Calcium provides the raw building material.
Vitamin K2 directs that calcium into the bones, where it can strengthen the skeleton.
Without adequate vitamin D3, calcium absorption is poor. In fact, only around 10–15% of dietary calcium is absorbed when vitamin D levels are low. When vitamin D levels are sufficient, calcium absorption can increase to approximately 30–40%, providing the body with the building blocks needed to maintain bone mineral density.
However, increasing calcium absorption is only the first step.
Once calcium enters the bloodstream, the body must determine where it should go. This is where vitamin K2 becomes essential.
Vitamin K2 activates osteocalcin, the protein responsible for binding calcium into the bone matrix, where it contributes to bone strength and mineralisation. At the same time, vitamin K2 activates Matrix Gla Protein (MGP), which helps prevent calcium from accumulating in soft tissues such as arteries.

Together, these nutrients perform complementary but very different roles. Vitamin D3 helps you absorb calcium. Vitamin K2 helps you use calcium wisely.
This partnership becomes increasingly important during perimenopause and menopause. As oestrogen levels decline, bone remodelling accelerates, with bone breakdown occurring faster than bone formation. Women can lose up to 20% of their bone mass during the first five to seven years after menopause, significantly increasing the risk of osteopenia and osteoporosis.
While calcium provides the mineral required for bone, neither calcium nor vitamin D alone can activate osteocalcin. Without sufficient vitamin K2, much of the calcium absorbed may not be incorporated into the skeleton as efficiently.
Clinical studies have shown that combining vitamin D3 with MenaQ7® vitamin K2 enhances the activation of osteocalcin and Matrix Gla Protein, supporting optimal calcium utilisation throughout the body. This complementary relationship has led many experts to recommend that vitamin D3 and vitamin K2 be considered together rather than in isolation when developing a comprehensive bone health strategy.

Bone health also depends on far more than calcium alone. Healthy bones require adequate dietary protein, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc and vitamin C to build a strong collagen framework, alongside regular weight-bearing and resistance exercise to stimulate bone formation. Vitamin D3 and vitamin K2 help ensure that the minerals supporting this framework are delivered to where they are needed most.
For many adults—particularly postmenopausal women—the combination of vitamin D3 and MenaQ7® vitamin K2 represents one of the most evidence-based nutritional approaches for supporting bone mineral density, bone quality and healthy ageing.
Simply put:
• Vitamin D3 opens the door for calcium absorption.
• Vitamin K2 shows calcium where to go.
• Together, they help build stronger bones while supporting healthy arteries.
