Q: WHAT IS PROTECTOMETER…
A: VERY COOL WORKBOOK FOR PAIN SUFFERERS…

Protectometer Pain Handbook

The “Protectometer” is a short, colourful, fun and interactive educational resource that helps patients better understand how and why they are in pain. The book is thought provoking, engaging and uses neuroscience to help us appreciate many of the common misconceptions around pain. It also suggests strategies we can use to treat pain within a biopsychosocial context.

“The great news for patients is that the Protectometer has been de-jargonified and is written using everyday language we can all relate to – Voila!!”

WHO ARE THE AUTHORS – ARE THESE GUYS ANY GOOD…

The Protectometer is one of a series of books produced by the Neuro Orthopedic Institute (noigroup.com.au).

The book is a great tool for comprehending all pain states; but has particular relevance to chronic or persistent pain.

There are 2 authors:

1. Dr. David Butler – is a clinician, an international freelance educator, an Adjunct Associate Professor with the University of South Australia and an Honoured Lifetime Member of the Australian Physiotherapy Association. His professional interests focus around the integration of neurobiology into clinical decision making and public and professional education in pain, stress and performance management.

2. Dr. Lorimer Moseley – a Professor of Clinical Neurosciences at the University of South Australia and Senior Principal Research Fellow at Neuroscience Research Australia. Lorimer is a regular keynote speaker at major international pain conferences and has won numerous prestigious awards within the pain field.

As you can see from the short video at the start of this book review, Lorimer and David gel together excellently using neuroscience to explain what we all experience clinically; waffle free!! These guys certainly know what they’re talking about.

Pain Management is not boring !

“Pain science is very cool and is so far removed from boring” Matthew Craig, bounceREHAB Physio

Their first groundbreaking book “Explain Pain” 2003 and revised 2nd edition 2013 are the official text book resource for Matthew and Paul’s current Masters University of LaTrobe Program in the subject of Advanced Clinical Physiotherapy (Pain Science).

Matt’s opinion is that if your physiotherapist, GP doctor, pain specialist, orthopedic or neurosurgeon has not read Explain Pain you are most likely not seeing the best set of professional hands to guide and support your therapy.

I KNOW SOMEONE WITH CHRONIC (OR PERSISTENT) PAIN – HOW WILL THIS BOOK HELP THEM?

Co-author Dr David Butler, founder of the Neuro Orthopaedic Institute, says that “it is no longer acceptable that pain be just managed: we must expect that it can be treated, and sufferers can alter it themselves through education.”

For some time now; the pain field has promoted the need to educate people how to live well with pain. The concepts within this book go one step further and propose that we can educate people to live well without pain. The Protectometer is used to develop one’s insight, knowledge and self awareness around their own pain experiences. Education and understanding are vital in treating the pain experience- but don’t take my word for it…the medical research and evidence for this approach to pain management is very favourable. The link below details strong medical journal literature for the effectiveness and support for Explaining Pain.

IS THIS STUFF BACKED UP BY RESEARCH…

A great paper from the American Pain Society that encapsulates the whole idea and value of understanding pain science and our own pain experiences. At the very least, please read the abstract. It’s awesome (if you need any hope that your pain can be managed better!).
